The Dialogue Among Generations - A Remarkable Architectural Addition to a Historic Building in Chatswood

"We were extremely fortunate to have the WWAA team assist us with the design. Initially, we planned to extend the backyard area, but we never imagined that so many unexpected designs can be incorporated within such a limited space to cater to the unique needs of each family member. We are truly grateful to the WWAA team for making our dream home come true."

– Jimmy & Ivy, our dear clients

[Project Introduction]

Around 20 years ago, Jimmy's father purchased this Federation historical building, constructed in 1900, captivated by its unique style and rarity. With the birth of the third generation, he decided to undertake an extension and alteration for his son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.

Our challenge was to preserve the historical building's appearance and distinctive features while ensuring that the new addition respected the historical context in terms of scale and materials, but also satisfying the younger generation's desire for a modern, clean, and light atmosphere. At the same time, we also aimed to depict the continuity of three generations through the spatial layout and colour scheme.

We utilized the courtyard and service spaces (bathrooms and storage areas) as a transitional zone between the old and new spaces. The intentional lowering of the roof height in this area emphasizes the contrast between the preserved historical area at the front and the newly constructed area at the rear - old vs. new, traditional vs. modern, heavy vs. light, inward vs. outward, private vs. open.

Due to the floor space ratio (FSR) restrictions, the available space for expansion was extremely limited. To maximize the sense of space, we employed several techniques:

1.      Bringing outdoor spaces indoors through the courtyard.

2.      Incorporating a mezzanine level to increase the vertical spatial perception in the living area.

3.      Integrating garden views of surrounding fences into the master bedroom's ensuite and the kitchen area.

In terms of landscape design, we emphasized the interaction and continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces. We planted exquisitely shaped Japanese maple trees in the courtyard, infusing the daily living spaces with the variations of seasons and climate. In the future, this lovely family living in this house will be able to appreciate and savour the natural and seasonal changes throughout their children's growth journey.
